The beaches near Tamarindo serve as vital nesting grounds for several species of sea turtles, offering a rare opportunity to witness one of nature's most ancient rituals. Under the cover of darkness, female turtles emerge from the Pacific to dig their nests and lay eggs on the warm sand, a spectacle that has repeated for millions of years along this stretch of Guanacaste coastline.

Guided night tours led by certified naturalist guides follow strict observation protocols to minimise disturbance to the nesting turtles. Small groups walk the beach in near-total darkness, using only red-filtered light when a nesting turtle is located. The guide explains each stage of the nesting process, from the laborious crawl up the beach to the careful egg-laying and the meticulous covering of the nest before the turtle returns to the sea.

The Tamarindo region hosts both leatherback turtles, the largest of all sea turtles, and olive ridley turtles throughout the nesting season. Several local conservation projects work to protect nests from poaching and predators, and participation in these tours directly supports ongoing protection efforts.
