A horseback ride through the volcanic foothills of Rincón de la Vieja, where the rugged landscapes of Guanacaste reveal themselves one stride at a time. The trail winds through dry tropical forest, across shallow river crossings, and along open savannas where cattle ranches stretch toward the Pacific horizon.

Well-trained Criollo horses — descendants of the breeds brought by Spanish settlers — move confidently over the uneven terrain, guided by a local cowboy who shares stories of ranch life and the volcanic geology that shaped this region. Howler monkeys call from the treetops, parakeets flash through the canopy, and iguanas scatter along the sunlit trail.

The route passes through landscapes that shift from dense forest to open grassland, with views of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano towering above and the Pacific coastline glimmering in the distance. Steam vents and the faint scent of sulfur hint at the volcanic activity beneath the surface.

This is an authentic Guanacastecan experience — unhurried, immersed in nature, and connected to the cowboy culture that defines this corner of Costa Rica. No riding experience is necessary, and the gentle pace suits all levels of confidence.

Rincón de la Vieja is an active andesitic complex volcano located in the northwestern part of Costa Rica, approximately 25 km from Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste. The name translates to "The Old Woman's Corner," which is a nod to a local legend about a young woman whose lover was thrown into the volcano's crater by her father. Following this event, she chose to live in solitude on the mountain and was believed to possess healing powers. Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park is centered around the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and its surrounding volcanic and natural features. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of unique plants and animals, as well as numerous hot, bubbling sulphurous mud pits and a small "mini-volcano."
