Bijagua de Upala Costa Rica

Bijagua de Upala is a peaceful rural town in northern Costa Rica, located between Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes. It offers an authentic countryside experience, surrounded by lush forests, rivers, and farmland, far from the busy tourist centers. The town is small and welcoming, with basic services, local sodas (traditional eateries), and family-run lodges that reflect everyday Costa Rican life. The main attraction nearby is Tenorio Volcano National Park, home to the famous Rio Celeste, a striking turquoise river colored by a natural chemical reaction in the water. A clearly marked hiking trail leads through dense rainforest to several highlights, including the point where two rivers meet and appear to “turn” blue, a dramatic waterfall, and bubbling thermal springs. The hike is moderately challenging—especially when it’s rainy—but very rewarding for nature lovers and photographers. Bijagua is also an excellent base for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, with frequent sightings of toucans, trogons, hummingbirds, monkeys, sloths, and colorful frogs. Local guides offer night walks to spot nocturnal species and farm tours where visitors can learn about sustainable agriculture and sample fresh products like coffee, sugar cane, and tropical fruits. The climate in Bijagua is generally cool and humid, with frequent showers that keep the landscape vibrant and green. Travelers should pack sturdy walking shoes, a light rain jacket, and clothing suitable for both sun and rain. Most visitors arrive by car from La Fortuna, Liberia, or the northern border; roads are partly paved but can be rough in places. Bijagua is ideal for travelers who prefer nature, hiking, and tranquility over nightlife, making it a great stop on a longer Costa Rica itinerary focused on ecotourism and off-the-beaten-path exploration.
