Puerto Viejo is the first district of the canton of Sarapiquí, in the province of Heredia, Costa Rica. It has an area of 426.73 km² and has an estimated population of 20,174 inhabitants (2011), with an average population density of 47.28 inhabitants / km². The head is the homonymous city of Puerto Viejo, located 82 km north of the city of Heredia. It has an altitude of 37 meters above sea level. The zone is of flat topography, humid climate and it is furrowed by mighty rivers of divagante course, being the main one the dirty River. Puerto Viejo is on the banks of the Sarapiquí River (near its confluence with the Puerto Viejo River), where a small fluvial port is located for coastal shipping of shallow draft vessels.
